This is another of those books that are fun to leaf through, skim, pause, return to.
Sorry to do this to my loyal followers but since my friends' houses keep burning down I thought I'd make a record of my favorite reference books!
This book captures views of America from 1850 to 1890, a period when there was a great hunger for pictures of places and events. Although photography had been invented, there was no way by which images could be printed in the popular press until 1890 when Stephen Horgan developed the halftone plate. The process of wood block engraving was developed into a fine art, and quickly filled the pages of Harper's, Leslie's and other weekly magazines.
