David Hey (1) (1938–2016)

A thoroughly-researched book by the late Professor of Local and Family History at Sheffield University, the Grass Roots of English History is a drains-up view of the landscape, times and people that shaped England.
The author clearly brings a lifetime of love and experience to this surprisingly readable narrative, and adds extensive notes and a comprehensive bibliography. I particularly appreciated his concise explanation (on pg. 185) of the origins of the religious divide in northern Ireland.
