I read this aloud to my nine-year-old grandson at his request; he had already heard the audio book, and thought I would enjoy it. He was correct.

Fantasy isn't my favourite genre, but the main characters, twelve-year-0ld twins Fran and Bran, are delightful and believable people, and the book begins and ends in the 'real' world.

There is plenty of humour appropriate to children of around eight and upwards, but it's also the kind of book that can be appreciated and enjoyed by adults.

Definitely recommended.

This was a charming read about twins who lose both parents to freak lightning and now their unprepared aunt is in charge. One of the twins is deaf but this is treated as an everyday thing in the story. The twins start to get into trouble until a book of their mother's stories leads them to adventure and to discover some things about themselves and the world that will change everything.
I did guess some of the twists from early on but I've read stories like it and enjoyed them, this was a well-done version.… (altro)
