Christoph Hein (born 8 April 1944): As a poet, playwright, essayist, and novelist, Christoph Hein is considered one of the most important and respected literary voices in Germany today. Widely acclaimed in Germany and abroad, Hein's works have been translated into 17 languages. The Tango Player, mostra altro Hein's second novel to appear in English, was acclaimed as an ingenious and provocative novel by the Times Literary Supplement. The Tango Player gives the reader an insight into life in East Germany. Other novels by Hein include The Distant Lover and Death of Horn. La couverture n’est pas du genre qui m’attire. Mais je n’ai pas pu résister à un livre qui se passe en RDA, un pays aujourd’hui disparu dont je connais finalement très peu de choses. L’histoire m’a peut-être laissée un peu sur ma faim, car l’on balaye en à peine 200 pages toute une vie, celle de Friedeward Ringeling, depuis son enfance dans les décombres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale dont son père (gazé par erreur de la Première) sort presque indemne jusqu’au lendemain de la réunification. La majeure partie du livre décrit les années d’adolescence et la belle histoire d’amour avec son ami Wolfgang. Mais cette histoire adolescente sera le sommet de la vie amoureuse de Friedeward, qui finalement, passera le reste de sa vie à cacher son homosexualité, bien que la RDA aie aboli les lois la criminalisant. Car ce n’est pas que la loi qui détermine la façon dont une personne vit sa sexualité, c’est aussi sa morale et son éducation, qui, même si on la rejette, laisse des traces indélébiles.
Le livre est construit de façon assez étrange, avec une première partie très détaillée et une autre beaucoup plus rapide, avec même des thématiques qui sont lancés mais n’aboutissent pas vraiment (comme par exemple
