Well, this is probably only a three-star book, but I loved it when I was a child, so it gets a bonus. I was so glad to see it in the thrift store! It is a little preachy and simple, but I think sometimes kids like the comfort of a clear message they can believe in. I think I also liked the idea of having a kindly older man for a neighbor (I didn't know either of my grandpas) and I loved the picture of Jane and Bill arguing over whether the garden should be flowers or vegetables. Not quite as engaging as the original Mr. Bumba books that I read as a child, but I do still recommend these entire series of easy-reader contemporary fables about communities that work together to find solutions to challenges affecting neighbors and friends.

A new Mr. Bumba book, to me. Again the kindly older gentleman faces a bit of a dilemma, and his young friends help him find a solution that works out for all concerned. A nice, comforting, simple lesson in cooperation. Now, as an adult, I'm really questioning Mrs. Abby's energy levels - she must be SuperWoman in disguise. But it's still a darling book. I wish I could find more in the series, but the thrift store only had the two.
