Will the hurt Santiago felt in the past keep him from exploring this more than just a vacation fling? This was such a super cute novella that I devoured it in minutes. Lonely is hardly a big enough word to describe Salem Mitchell’s world. Her mother died when she was born, leaving her alone with a father who emotionally mistreats her while keeping her trapped in the house her whole life, isolated from the rest of the world. The two of them would walk the fence, talking for hours, he on his side, she on her side . . . until the year she was seventeen and her father caught the two of them holding hands over the fence.

Now it’s Salem’s eighteenth birthday and she’s realized that her father isn’t going to let her leave the house, even though she’s now an adult. So she’s running, heading toward Campbell’s farm.

How will Campbell feel if she reaches the McConnely farm before her father catches her? Does the young farmer still care about her? And will he be willing to stand up against Salem’s father who is certain to do everything he can to keep his daughter from leaving?

Short, sweet, sexy, and satisfying . . . a perfect little story with just the right amount of angst and the setting right of things for Salem after the desperate years she’d spent forcefully confined by her obsessive father. The plot is relatively straightforward, trading surprising twists for the satisfying realization that Salem will finally be safe and Campbell, true to the title, stands as her protector, her guardian angel.

Readers who enjoy happily-ever-after love stories will find much to appreciate here. Yes, it’s definitely instant love, but it’s also a short story with things moving along at a swifter pace than in a longer novel. Readers’ hearts are sure to be smiling at the joy Salem and Campbell have found with each other.
