Someone is killing women in Whitechapel. Based on his recently published novel, A Study in Scarlet, Dr Arthur Conan Doyle is asked by the Gladstone government to assist the police. He, in turn, requests the aid of Dr Joseph Bell, the real life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. To help the pair navigate the twisty and dangerous Whitechapel area, Margaret Harkness, a journalist living in the area as she chronicles the murders, is recruited to help them navigate the very twisty and dangerous streets of Whitechapel. But just as the trio begin their investigation, another murder is committed by the man who has been dubbed Jack the Ripper.

As their search becomes more urgent, it seems like they are stymied at every move. Rumours abound putting Jewish residents in danger and there are jurisdictional issues with the police Add to this, the murderer’s seeming ability to carry on right under the noses of the police while taunting them in the press and Doyle can’t help feeling, at times, that even Sherlock Holmes couldn’t solve it.

A Knife in the Fog by Bradley Harper is an intelligent, engrossing, and highly entertaining historical mystery. The story is, like the Holmes stories, mostly a puzzle but there’s plenty of red herrings and twists and turns to keep the story moving. A definite fun readnot only for fans of Sherlock Holmes but for people who enjoy smart historical mysteries.

The narrator (reader), Matthew Lloyd Davies, does an excellent job on audio of portraying the different voices of the three main real-life characters, Arthur Conan Doyle, Dr. Joseph Bell, and Margret Harnkness, that the listener is transported back to Victorian Era London, thus making this fictional version of how the three investigate the murders of Jack the Ripper so compelling. The storyline/book is written with such rich atmospheric details, while also weaving in the forensics known and used at the time by the three investigators and police detectives, that it makes for one entertaining and engrossing listen, or read. Even for those who are not Sherlockian aficionados.… (altro)
