The Advantage of Lyric di Barbara Hardy

Apparently, one of the disadvantages is lack of a sense of humor. Ms. Hardy's thesis is that that lyric poetry is unique in being able to enverbalize (to use a word loosed on the world by Robert Magliola) feelings without recourse to narrative or character, while, simultaneously engaging in deep reflection on the meaning of those feelings. Poets given the treatment include Donne, Clough, Yeats, Hopkins, Auden, Thomas (Dylan) and Plath.
