The books itself presents a rather comprehensive history of faith healing in America from the mid 1800's until the early 1900's. The issue I had with the book is that the author does not seem to interrogate her sources, and at times it reads like a hagiography. Good book to go to if you need to know about faith healing, but this is probably not the best resource.

This is a chapter in the Women's movement that is little mentioned. The author shows how the revivalist and holiness movements of the nineteenth century motivated women to adopt a feminist ideology, quite different from the one in action today. These women worked for positive, moral changes in society, including antislavery, prohibition, and the woman's right to vote. Frances Willard, Phoebe Palmer, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others are discussed in this publication which includes the ministry of Charles Finney who helped to inspire women to be more active in church and society in general.… (altro)
