Thea von Harbou (1888–1954)

Director F.W. Murnau and scriptwriter Thea von Harbou both took a change of pace from their usual dramas with this satirical farce about Grand Duke Don Ramon XX (Harry Liedtke), whose idyllic country is threatened by revolution. The troublemakers are a trio of conspirators, working with a corrupt financier who intends to convert the landscape into a profitable sulfur mine. Don Ramon comes close to being hanged, but is rescued by Olga (Mady Christians), the Grand Duchess of Russia, who loves him and agrees to pay off all his debts. A compromising love letter from Olga falls into the conspirators’ hands, but she and Don Ramon, with the help of the adventurer Philip Collins (Alfred Abel) are able to set their affairs right. Die Geschichte spielt in einem niederländischen Dorf im 17. Jahrhundert. Dorfrichter Adam wacht verkatert auf. Er hat einen tiefen Schnitt am Bein, ein blaues Auge und Wunden am Kopf. Seine Perücke ist und bleibt verschwunden. Der Gerichtsschreiber Licht erscheint und ist ob des Zustandes des Richters erstaunt: Adam behauptet, er sei beim Aufstehen gestürzt. In seiner Perücke habe die Katze nachts ihre Kinder zur Welt gebracht, sodass diese nicht mehr zu gebrauchen sei. Licht verkündet Adam, dass Gerichtsrat Walter aus Utrecht im Dorf erwartet wird, der derzeit eine Kontrollreise durch die Dörfer unternimmt. Adam verfällt in Panik und will gerade die Akten ordnen lassen, als Walters Ankunft angekündigt ist. Als der erfährt, dass an diesem Tag im Dorf Gerichtstag ist, will er zur Verhandlung bleiben... L'arrivo della Morte in una cittadina tedesca divide due innamorati; per salvare l'amato la ragazza deve superare tre prove (a Bagdad, a Venezia, in Cina), ma fallisce. Solo donando se stessa sconfiggerà la Morte. Fiaba romantica con tripudio di invenzioni scenografiche, che affonda in patrimoni folclorici di mezzo mondo, ma con un occhio che è sempre quello dell'ottocento tedesco e dell'espressionismo.
