When Holly Jean's father is drafted to fight in World War II, she moves to the country to live with her grandmother and great aunt. Dismayed by the move, she misses her friend and the basic luxuries of the city. After learning about a ghost and a murder, she begins scouting around the area, trying to uncover the mystery.

This was a well written and fast paced book. It is ideal for pre-teen girls, who will connect with Holly Jean and love her adventures. Overall, highly recommended.

NCLA Review -In rural Iowa, Melinda Currie, her husband, and their two friends have created a simpler life to get closer to God. Through the years, their friends have taken control and the beautiful area has become a ministry gone bad. Guards prevent anyone from leaving or having contact with the outside world. Living conditions are horrible and they must work long hard hours for which they are never paid. After Melinda is told her husband has been killed, she finds the courage to escape with her children. Leaving this dangerous situation, they face many hardships. Fortunately, they meet a religious family that helps them rebuild their faith and keep them safe. A mockingbird has great significance throughout the story. An eye opener about the cult community, this would also be a very good choice for a book club. Questions for discussion are provided in the back of the book. Rating: 4 —PD 305p, paper, Starik 2008, 978-1-934684-01-6, $13.99 [813.6]… (altro)
