I liked the flow of the book and it was an interesting read. What I feel is strange, is how after the main story part between Mike and Joey intersect, it changes to the abuse of the Catholic Church. Nothing is ever mentioned about this when advertising the book. I would have to be careful who I would recommend this book to because of that.

So, I'm not an ebook reader and I've been avoiding this book as a result. Since I keep getting the email of shame, "you have won 2 giveaways in the last two years. You have submitted 1 review, with 1 still outstanding," I decided to read and review this book. Maybe then I'll get selected for more books? But, I digress, as this has nothing to do with the actual book. I was pleasantly surprised by the easy flow of the writing and got hooked into the quick style. Also, though nothing fancy, typical of the genre, and simplistic in the writing, the author made it a pleasure to read and hold attention. If you're looking to fly through a book, this is a go to (and may be an author for you). The characters and their intertwinement was interesting. Seeing how they would come together in the end was something to look forward to. Although the characters knew each other and crossed in the same circles so to speak, they didn't really know just how connected they were. It was through one shop keeper that our priest and detective overlapped and ultimately discovered their secret link to each other. Unfortunately, once it was revealed the priest was at the event that killed the detective's parents the story was really done, with still another 100 pages to go. The religious overtones of the book and the 'last case to solve,' really become the downfall of the book. It almost felt as if the book was finished but page quota wasn't met so the added pursuit of how to blow up the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal was loosely and oversimply handled/addressed by the detective. It my have been a better part of the storyline if better developed and put into the story ahead of the real reveal of the priest and detective relationship. A simple detective story, with simple character and plot development. Recommended for someone looking for an easy detective read.

This book was really hard to follow in the beginning and sort of all over the place BUT the second half was a decent story line. If I give the author the benefit of the doubt I believe that he was just trying to set up a bunch of characters but unfortunately it was just too confusing. If you could split the book into two reviews I would give the first half a 2 star review & the second half 4 stars.
