This 189 page scholarly work is supplemented by 33 plates showing quarry sites, hammerstones, associated pottery and various copper artifacts. Plates 5 and 6 are particularly important archives since they show the scorn for cultural values of a magnificent 5720 pound copper nugget found at a depth of 16.5 feet on Isle Royale in 1874. The huge nugget, illustrated in two photos from glass negatives, has obvious signs of cultural "shaving". The nugget was shown in the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 and was then smelted.… (altro)
