Temple Grandin was born August 29, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a bestselling author, doctor and professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, and leader of both the animal welfare and autism advocacy movements. Grandin was diagnosed with autism in 1950. She was immediately mostra altro placed in a structured nursery, had speech therapy, and had a nanny spend hours playing turn-based games with her. At the age of four, she began talking and her progress continued. In 1970, Grandin received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire. She received her master's degree in animal science from Arizona State University in 1975, and in 1989, she received a Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Grandin, being a high-functioning autistic, is widely-known for her work in autism advocacy. She has been featured on major televisions programs such as the Today Show and ABC's Primetime Live. She has also been featured in Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, and the New York Times. Grandin was the subject of the Horizon documentary "The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow" and was described by Oliver Sacks in the title of his narrative book: An Anthropologist on Mars. Grandin's bestselling book: Thinking in Pictures is scheduled to be released as an HBO film in 2009. Grandin's Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human have also been bestsellers. A diciotto anni Temple Grandin si costruì una macchina per gli abbracci. Aveva visto che le mucche diventavano mansuete dentro la gabbia di contenimento usata dal veterinario per visitarle, e aveva intuito che uno strumento simile avrebbe potuto calmare anche lei. Così, con due assi di compensato che si stringevano dolcemente ai lati di una panca, realizzò lo strano congegno. Che funzionò a meraviglia. E Temple, giovane autistica con molti problemi di relazione, capì di avere una speciale affinità con gli animali. E capì che per essere felice avrebbe dovuto studiarli e stare con loro il più possibile. Quel che non sapeva è che varie altre – e non meno spiazzanti – scoperte avrebbero fatto di lei uno dei più famosi esperti del comportamento animale. Ma che cosa hanno in comune gli individui autistici e gli animali| Rispondono agli stimoli esterni in modo diverso dalla norma, e tuttavia secondo regole precise, con un linguaggio interiore coerente e un’attenzione concentrata su particolari visivi, uditivi e tattili che a noi sfuggono del tutto. Per Temple, incapace di capire i rituali della socialità, un abbraccio non è, ad esempio, che un sovraccarico sensoriale di impulsi contraddittori. Ecco perché deve rifugiarsi dentro una macchina, se vuole provare senza complicazioni quel piacere. Agli animali capita lo stesso con una grande varietà di stimoli, che interpretano secondo i loro codici specifici. Un impermeabile giallo appeso a un cancello per noi non ha alcun significato particolare, ma per una mucca è un segnale, che può scatenare reazioni di panico. Per scoprire questa correlazione inaspettata occorre una mente fuori dal comune, in grado di vedere la realtà dal punto di vista dell’animale. Capire il linguaggio degli animali non è solo un’avventura intellettuale, ma anche un modo concreto per imparare a comunicare con loro: grazie a una donna autistica e al suo affascinante mondo interiore, oggi siamo in grado di farlo.… (altro)
