I found the intersecting lives of the characters fascinating and found myself especially engrossed in the Phoebe and Adam chapters.

This is not my usual fare and I can't remember how I heard about it but I'm delighted I did. Connor is a pre-teen when his mother dies and a teenager when his father dies. It's left to his brother, Jack, 10 years his senior to stand in as his family. Goldhagen chronicles the ups and downs of this relationship over several decades in fascinating chapters that nearly stand on their own as short stories. It's really kind of fascinating to read.

Gr 10+
Molly, a senior, grapples with love and life changes in Shari Goldhagen’s newest contemporary young adult fiction. Molly adores her job at FishTopia--she gets to watch reruns of Golden Girls episodes and hang out with crush Alex. Veronica, Molly’s sister, is younger and seems to be falling into the wrong crowd while Molly’s mother embarks on a new obsession, which is to make one cake a day for 100 days. Molly struggles to balance a slew of abrupt changes: FishTopia is set to close its doors for good, Veronica and Alex appear to be dating, and Dr. B., Molly’s therapist, becomes too close for comfort. Molly, endearingly likeable, strives to save her sister, her workplace, and her relationships in this teen-angsty novel. The cake motif, forced into the narrative at random, is out at place until the very end, when everything coalesces into an “aha!” moment. This book deals with mature themes—cursing, sexual situations, and inappropriate relationships, so this book is recommended for grades 10 and up. VERDICT: Recommended for a mature audience who also enjoys Rainbow Rowell.

Great characters, engaging story, sharp writing--what more can you want? I really zipped through the last 200 pages of this book. That's how I define a 5-star book--I can't wait to read it every day. Kudos to the author for creating some of the best sentences I've come across in a while!
