When young British girl Lily Marks is sent to dance lessons by her doctor, in order to strengthen her weak legs, no one realizes that this is setting in motion a series of events that will lead her to become Alicia Markova, the world's first Jewish prima ballerina assoluta. Inspired by the example of Anna Pavlova, who tells her that she must be prepared to work very hard, and to make sacrifices, Lily eventually goes on to become a world famous dancer. The young girl with weak legs becomes the unlikely, but immensely gifted ballerina...

A lovely book, one which pairs an engaging and informative story from American author Krystyna Poray Goddu with beautiful artwork from Japanese illustrator Cosei Kawa, An Unlikely Ballerina is less of a full picture-book biography, and more of a "life snippet" story. The narrative covers only Markova's early life, skipping from her meeting with Pavlova to her eventual triumph as a dancer. An afterword provides more information, as well as two photographs of the real Markova/Marks. That said, it is an immensely engaging book, focusing on how Marks' initial physical challenges led, through the happy chance of her doctor's suggestion, and her own years of hard work, to such marvelous end results. Kawa's artwork is slightly surreal, and has a distinct fairy-tale feeling to it. I particularly loved his use of color. Recommended to all young ballet lovers, and to anyone looking for children's stories that address having physical challenges as a youngster.

A Girl Called Vincent, by Krystyna Poray Goddu, tells about Edna St.Vincent Millay, a famous poet of the 1900s. Edna was born February 22, 1892 in Rockland, Maine. As a young girl Edna had always loved poetry. She came from a poverty stricken family so she had to help out more than she could write poetry. When she was older and graduated from high school it just meant more time doing chores and household work while her two younger sisters attended school. One of Vincent's poems was finally recognized one day and everyone loved her. She won multiple prizes, including cash prizes which would go to her mother to pay the bills, and acted in multiple plays. She read to a group of people which consisted of people from college boards and they each offered her a full paid trip to their college. Vincent chose Vaasar in New York. Surprisingly Vincent did horrible in school, not education-wise but skipping classes when she desired. She was barely able to graduate. Later when Vincent was 31 she married Eugen, a rich man who would import coffee beans from Java. Vincent suffered from numerous injuries when she was older, including thinking about committing suicide. But Vincent died October 19, 1950 by a heart attack. Her works are still very well known to this day. One of her most famous works was the poem entitled, First Gig.

I thought this book was a very good read. I've heard of Edna St. Vincent Millay countless times but never really knew much about her, only that she was a poet. The story of her life was nothing like I expected. She moved four times just to try and find a better place to live with her mother and two sisters. I didn't think that such a famous poet as Vincent could be so poor. Goddu is really able to describe all the high and lows of Vincent's life. This is a book I would definitely recommend to others. It's one of those books that you pick up and can't put down until you finish it.

A biography of a poet who was very well known during her own lifetime (early 20th century) but lesser known today. The author is able to present Vincent as relatable and relevant to today’s teenagers with a judicious use of narrative and Vincent’s own poetry and journal writings.

The author has included photos, poems, letter and diary excerpts, a time line, and bibliographic notes.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher at ALA in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion of the book or my review itself.

Goddu tells the true story of the fascinating life of renowned female poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

This book flew by! I finished it in just a few hours. It's absolutely fascinating and really well-written. I closed the book feeling I had learned so much, and had a lot of fun doing so.

There's really nothing not to like about this book. It is aimed towards middle schoolers, but I feel adults can and should read it too.

I would definitely recommend this book. It's a great, fun way to learn about a fascinating women and be introduced to her poetry.
