"The Lake Regions of Central Africa: A Record of Modern Discovery" is a travel narrative written by John Geddie. First published in 1859, the book recounts the author's explorations and discoveries in the central regions of Africa, particularly focusing on the lake areas.

Geddie's narrative takes readers on a thrilling journey through the uncharted and mysterious lands of Central Africa. He describes his encounters with local tribes, the breathtaking landscapes, and the magnificent lakes that dot the region. Through his vivid descriptions, readers gain insights into the diverse cultures, customs, and natural wonders that define the area.

The book covers a wide range of topics, including geography, history, wildlife, and the challenges faced by explorers in the region. Geddie provides detailed accounts of his expeditions, shedding light on the difficulties and triumphs experienced during his travels. He shares his observations of the indigenous peoples, their way of life, and the impact of European influence on the region.

"The Lake Regions of Central Africa" also reflects the prevailing attitudes of the time, particularly regarding African civilizations and their relationship with Western exploration. It is important to approach the narrative with an understanding of the historical context and recognize potential biases or ethnocentric perspectives.

Geddie's writing style is engaging and informative, making the book accessible to both general readers and those interested in African exploration and history. The author's passion for discovery and his dedication to documenting his experiences shine through in his vivid and descriptive prose.

This short book leads the reader through the Scotland depicted by Sir Walter Scott. John Geddie peppers his descriptions with Scott's poetry. Paintings by E. W. Haslehust adds an interesting dimension, making the slender volume a treat for those who love the arts.

Unusual format. Looks like the large type and line spacing were needed to expand Geddie's text to accomodate Haslehust's 12 magnificent paintings. Would be interesting to know who has the originals.
