Breve biografia
[excerpted from author's website]
In addition to writing, she currently serves on the national Board of Directors of Sisters in Crime and is a co-founder of Crime Writers of Color, alongside Walter Mosley and Gigi Pandian. Kellye previously spent 8 years working in Hollywood, including a stint writing for the CBS drama Cold Case. People were always surprised to learn what she did for a living—probably because she seemed way too happy to be brainstorming ways to murder people.

A former magazine editor, Kellye holds a B.S. in magazine writing from Florida A&M and an MFA in screenwriting from USC's famed film school. Having moved back to her native New Jersey, she spends her mornings commuting to Manhattan for her job at a leading media company—while still happily brainstorming ways to commit murder.

A good solid mystery. Very traditional, despite all the trappings of influencers, apps, online communications, etc.A fair number of red herrings and a bit of an exploration of race, identity and family.Everything you could ask for in a mystery

Kellye Garrett is a fresh and exciting voice in the mystery realm. In this novel, she gives us a naive protagonist who shuns ambition and has lived a stunted life ever since she was arrested after leaving a party and falsely accused of having weed in her car. With a criminal sentence in her background, she has given up on her dreams, until she meets a handsome, charming man who sweeps her off to a vacation in a luxurious Jersey City Airbnb, The neighbors are suspicious of the Black couple and are militantly searching for a missing white woman, with a TikTok influencer taking up the cause. Nevertheless, they begin to have a wonderful time traveling to Manhattan - though her boyfriend keeps breaking his promise to leave work behind. She's getting impatient with his furtive phone conversations until one morning she wakes up to find him missing and a dead white woman on the floor.

On the whole, I enjoyed reading this story, though I found the protagonist a bit hard to get to know, and her rapid-changing attitudes about her missing boyfriend was a little irritating (though not unrealistic). Toward the end, either I wasn't paying enough attention or there were some major plot holes. But the author's understanding of social media and her use of it in the story (as in Garrett's earlier Like a Sister) was intriguing.

I love Kellye Garrett and her writing. While this book is definitely different than her Hollywood Homicide books, it's still another great one. This audiobook is very well done and the narrator, Bahni Turpin, is talented. I always love listening to Bahni Turpin as the narrator on audiobooks and she did great with this one. She really brought the story to life, also the characters, and brought their personalities out, which added to the listening experience.
This story is a good one. It's a mystery/thriller about Lena Scott and her half-sister, Desiree Pierce is found dead. Lena becomes the unofficial detective in the case of her half-sister's death, which they claim is due to a drug overdose, but Lena doesn't think it adds up. As Lena starts to investigate, she finds more questions than answers to everything. Lena checking into things and trying to find/figure out what happened with Desiree brings out complicated family dynamics and relationships that have to be navigated to help figure out what happened. I love Lena and her character and this engaging and great thriller.
Thanks so much to Hachette Audio for letting me listen to and review this ALC. Make sure to check this out and give it a listen. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
