republished this volume, published for the first time in 1932 with the title Garibaldi condottiero, Garibaldi the Commander.
The several essays composing this volume provide an overarching account of Generai Giuseppe Garibaldi's entire military life. This history ranges from the years in South America, where he fought on land, rivers, and at sea, to the 1870-1871 campaign in France. This time frame, spanning 35 years, represented for Garibaldi the the most intense and important period of his life, as well as a milestone towards the Unification of ltaly. This period is marked by clashes and battles, sieges and landings, from the city of Varese to the Volturno River, from Calatafimi to Bezzecca, from Rome to Marsala, with Garibaldi always serving under the banner of voluntarism, as major generai of the Sardinian army first,
and then of the I talian Army. Moreover, this volume gives a short biography of the authors of the different essays, all officers and experts of military history in an epoch when writers in uniform had and deserved the exclusive right of discussing issues connected with this topic. Today, after 75 years, the literary style of these men may seem old-fashioned, but the content of their essays remains fully valid and constitutes an indispensable platform for further investigations.… (altro)
