I adored Gardner's other contemporary, "You're Welcome, Universe" and this book delivered another wonderful heap of girl-powered wit and charm in the form of cosplay-loving Cameron. I think this is very smartly written YA that brought up issues of sexism, girls in the "nerd" universe, and dealing with online harassment, all while balancing the heavier issues out with utterly delightful D&D scenes and cute romance (and family!) moments.
Sure, "Chaotic Good" is a little silly at times; the main plot revolves around Cameron dressing up as a boy in order to shop for comics in peace. But the book acknowledges that silliness with a couple "She's the Man" references and the whole story just becomes even more realistic. It's a great pairing of fluffy sweetness and teenage struggles, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys books like "Fangirl" or "Queens of Geek". I read the whole book in one setting and have officially added Whitney Gardner to my Favorite Authors list- can't wait to see what she does next! :)… (altro)

"Fake Blood" was a fun, fast graphic novel about friendship, vampires, and the first hints of romance in life. The art style was good in spots (such as room and character design) but I feel like the backgrounds especially could have used a little more detail and texture. I mostly picked this up because I adore Gardner's two YA contemporary novels and wanted to see her artwork more. I think this could have used a bit more pizzazz, but overall it was a good read!

This debut novel features Julia, a teen graffiti artist who revels in the act of subversive art like Banksy. She is deaf, as are her two moms, and so are her school and classmates. When she has to break out of her comfort zone and try and solve the mystery of who is vandalizing her art, she must open herself to the hearing world in new ways. Despite the author being hearing-abled, Gardner acknowledges four sensitivity readers who shared their insights from a deaf perspective. Reviewed with raves from the deaf community, this book features idiomatic expressions and ASL sentence structure as well as an accurate depiction of the struggles of lip-reading, for example, making this a compelling and relevant addition to any library.
