Funk draws on the list of the eight thoughts which provided the basis for the medieval Seven Deadly Sins. By exploring the eight thoughts she advocates that progress in the Spiritual life consists of, at least in part, learning to discipline and purge your thought life of competing temptations and desires, so that you can devote yourself more fully to God.

Very readable, interesting, and doable! Sr. Meg Funk is as interesting in print as she is in lecture. I highly recommend this book and the process she tries to convey to her readers.

To train ourselves, she recommends we practice what she terms the "six antidotes":
1. Watch our thoughts.
2. Notice the earliest rising of the thought.
3. Maintain a practice of ceaseless prayer.
4. Resist the impulse to move from ceaseless prayer to a dialog with YOURSELF.
5. Return to the present and re dedicate yourself to your vocation.
6. Be on your guard to temptation. Anticipate the seductive quality your thoughts.

Funk outlines 5 steps to discernment:
1. Ask the [Holy] Spirit to help (epiclesis). What is the question before me?
2. Make a virtual decision. Observe our thoughts arising.
>>thoughts from God
>>thoughts from self
>> thoughts from others
3. Ask for a confirming sign.
4. Make the decision.
5. Watch your thoughts and guard your heart.

Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23a):
Love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control.

There is much more to the book...I hope you any reader of this review will dip into it for themselves!

Draws a lot of parallels between Islam, Catholocism, and Buddhism. Interesting Perspective.
