Clement Freud was born on April 24, 1924 in Berlin, Germany. During World War II, he joined the Royal Ulster Rifles. He began his career in the hotel business before turning to journalism. He starting writing about cooking for newspapers and magazines in the 1950s and later expanded to a variety of mostra altro subjects such as sports. In the 1960s, his pet food commercials with a dog named Henry launched him on a long career as a television and radio personality. He was a regular panelist on the BBC's Just a Minute for more than 30 years. In 1968, he wrote the children's book Grimble and the sequel Grimble at Christmas in 1974. He also wrote an autobiography entitled Freud Ego. He began his political career in 1973 and continued in politics until 1987. He died on April 15, 2009 at the age of 84. 'The kind of cookery book I would like to have written.' says Egon Ronay. As one would expect from Mr Freud (1924 - 2009), this book is literate, full of interest and with very good recipes. A tremendously witty read, without being in any way lightweight.
Take the masterly original Grimble story and add a Christmas story of the boy with absurdly benignly negligently parents to serve up a perfect read for anybody who is not averse to a little silliness.
What an extraordinary chap was Clement Freud. He was cantankerous, rude, incredibly talented and humorous.
Whatever the man attempted, he gave 110% - read the chapter upon horse racing where Freud loses weight at a speed and in amounts that are difficult to contemplate: needless to say, he beat a regular amateur rider on his only outing.
Clement was the grandson of Sigmund Freud but, seems to have built his fame without even a nodding admission of this fact. This book is a thoroughly enjoyable read and an inspiration to us all.… (altro)

In 'Grimble at Christmas', Grimble fears that his rather bohemian parents have forgotten Christmas and so it is down to him to organise everything. This involves lots of preparations, like his home toast delivery service and the making of onion fudge. Wonderfully written and charming, 'Grimble' is an absolute must! Think Roald Dahl, but without the dark bits.
