Breve biografia: Lady Antonia Fraser, née Pakenham, was born in London to an aristocratic English family. Her mother was the distinguished biography Elizabeth Longford. She was educated at the Dragon School in Oxford, St. Mary's School, Ascot, and Oxford University. She is the author of major historical biographies, including Mary, Queen of Scots (1969), The Weaker Vessel (1984) and The Wives of Henry VIII (1996), as well as a popular mystery series featuring British television personality and investigative journalist Jemima Shore. She is a past chairman of the British Crime Writers Association. Lady Antonia married her second husband, the late Harold Pinter, in 1980, and is sometimes known as Lady Antonia Pinter. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011.

Le sei mogli di Enrico VIII di Antonia Fraser

La storia di Enrico VIII e delle sue sei mogli sembra fatta apposta per affascinare il pubblico: divorzi, tradimenti, esecuzioni, è quasi una soap opera ante-litteram. Il rischio per il biografo però è di romanzare troppo per il gusto del raccontare, o al contrario che in nome del rigore storico privi le vicende del mordente e del fascino che indubbiamente rivestono. La Fraser non cade in nessuna delle due trappole e ci offre un saggio curato nei dettagli senza rinunciare alla piacevolezza dell'esposizione. Il suo intento è donare spessore e profondità a queste donne intrappolate nel mito, immergendole in un contesto realistico e storicamente molto accurato; la forza del libro sta proprio nel non dimenticare mai che ci stiamo occupando di persone vere, con le loro ambizioni e i loro drammi privati aldilà dell'importanza storica che rivestono per i posteri.
Lo stile poi è brillante, a volte sembra quasi di leggere un romanzo vista la vivacità con cui è narrato e l'abbondanza di aneddoti e piccole scene quotidiane che snelliscono la prosa.
Penso sia un libro ideale per chi è appassionato di storia, ma allo stesso tempo è in cerca di un libro scorrevole che sia da leggere e non da "studiare".… (altro)

Le sei mogli di Enrico VIII di Antonia Fraser

fui fulminata da queste vicende da ragazzina, grazie a uno sceneggiato tv, una puntata per moglie. E le sapevo tutte a memoria, come i 7 nani, come i 7 re di Roma, come i 9 pianeti ďell'allora sistema solare e come oggi i 7 libri di Harry Potter.
Il libro è molto interessante, ben documentato un po' impersonale nello stile ma la mole e l'intricatezza di alcune vicende è parecchia; ammetto che l'ho approcciato con diffidenza perché l'ultima cosa che mi era capitata di leggere qualche anno fa su queste vicende, un libro su Caterina d'Aragona, la prima, la più importante, quella che è "durata" di più nella sfortunata serie di donne macinate dall'istrionico sovrano e dagli intrighi dei suoi consiglieri, altro non era che un polpettone romanzato di pura ricostruzione inventata. Questo della Fraser invece è un buon libro che cerca di tenere assieme tutti i filoni del periodo storico: instabilità e precarietà della corona e della dinastia Tudor, guerre, allenze e parentele europee, interessi economici, eresie e dibattiti religiosi (dallo spirituale al tempotale, al materiale).… (altro)
