Audible freebie. I found the beginning interesting, the part out chillies. But then it strayed into other topics. That was enough for me. 50% completed.

Surprisingly good for a short free Audible book. A story of hot chili peppers from around the world, along with weird interpersonal drama, psychology, etc.

This podcast, takes Australian reporter from his nut-loving son, off to California to investigate a $10 Million nut heist. He begins with describing how a farmer and a perhaps innocent trucker got bilked by high tech criminals, but then veers off into many tangentially connected topics. Food security, transportation, environmental costs of large-scale agriculture in California dessert, and workers rights are some of the issues. The whole series is about four hours worth of listening.

Nut Crimes, Trucking, Food Fraud and More
Review of the Audible Original audiobook (June 2020)

Marc Fennell's Nut Jobs starts out as an investigative report into almond and other nut thefts in California by organized crime. At first you might think this sounds like petty theft, but the quantities and qualities of nuts such as almonds can make the value of a tracker trailer load be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The documentary expands though into covering all sorts of issues related to water rights, food fraud, the impact of low-bidding on the food transportation industry, and guns & armaments. Fennell interviews everyone from farmers, law enforcement, private security, truckers (including one convicted of nut theft) and various authorities on food and food fraud. There is even a cameo appearance by another food historian author from June 2020’s free Audible Originals (Ken Albala of "History of Bourbon", original release Dec. 2019).

This was an entertaining and very informative audio documentary that was well presented by the author/narrator, who was also the presenter behind last year’s "It Burns: The Scandal-Plagued Race to Breed the World’s Hottest Chilli" (April 2019).

Nut Jobs was one of 10 Audible Original audiobooks available free for Audible members in the month of June 2020. It is available to everyone for a standard price.

Trivia and Links
Although this current audio-documentary was produced recently, the issue of almonds and almond theft is not a new topic, as a few quick internet searches will show you, such as:

California’s Almond Growers Cope With Thefts
(NPR, October 2006).
The Dark Side of Almond Use (The Atlantic, August 2014).
The Curious Case of the Disappearing Nuts (Outside, May 2017).
