The purpose of this book is very similar to the old saying, “making lemons out of lemonade.” The book shows us that when presented with a problem, you can always find a solution. Even in this story, the manager is able to find a unique way to solve the skunks smell problem and make everyone at the concert happy.
In my opinion I think this is a decent book. Growing up with this book as a child, one of the things I liked about it was its use of language. The book centers on the multiple meanings of the word “stink”. When the skunks band get on stage, they become disheartened to hear the manager say things like “ You Stink” and “Get off the stage” Realizing that the skunks didn’t play bad but smelled bad helped me expand on the fact that some words can have more than one meaning. While I thought that this was a great book growing up, a child that has never seen or heard of a skunk may be more confused since they lack the background knowledge about skunks and their bad smell. Background knowledge is need to explain why certain events took place in the illustrations, like how people would cover their noses any time the skunks came by, because the book relies so heavily on our background knowledge that it never explicitly states that the skunks have a bad smell, the closest being when the people at the concert say “We lub the Four Skunks!” which is said that way because the illustrations show them with clothespins on their noses to protect them the bad smell. This demonstrates that in order to infer this meaning we must analyze the illustrations, which thankfully enhance the text by filling in the gaps in the story.… (altro)
