For many of us, memories of middle school are fraught with surviving social drama and conflict, tackling heightened responsibilities and expectations, and enduring awkwardness and a struggle to fit in. Though kids haven't changed, their world today is vastly different from what navigating junior high was like for their parents, who never had to contend with the internet and social media. In her book, school counselor Phyllis L. Fagell identifies and provides excellent advice on critical skills that will help kids succeed through these potentially challenging years.

This title was recommended reading from my daughter's school as the students transitioned to sixth grade, and the school was also fortunate enough to secure the author's attendance at our parent book discussion, which was excellent! It's clear that her work as a counselor has given her valuable insight into what her students are experiencing. Each chapter focuses on a middle school skill, discusses why it is both important and challenging, and provides methods for talking to your child about it. I especially appreciated the insightful conversation starters offered at the end of each chapter. I have a feeling I'll be keeping this book at arm's length for the next two or three years.

This is a well-written and useful book about adolescents. Good advice is interspersed with vignettes to illustrate the difficulties students face in their social, emotional, and learning development, and this book is highly recommended for both parents and teachers. I found the ten key skills to be realistic and they put the focus on developing the student's development.

I received a digital ARC via NetGalley.
