Charles P. Everitt (1873–1951)

One of my favorite bookseller memoirs of all times, based on having the most, if not the best, anecdotes and startling stories. You really can't call this book methodical although it is organized by chapters and subjects. The quality of books and pamphlets dealt with are often rare and esceedingly rare, and, in this day and age, downright unobtainable. He is not afraid to name names, and often with pride. His writing style is strictly conversational and first person and Everitt rarely gets philosophical. This book is really, truly, just a blast, loads of fun. In the end, he claims not to have saved much money, of course, he enjoyed at least three month vacations every year! Having been a long time bookseller myself there is much to realte to, not just the big wins, but also the losses.… (altro)
