3127 The German Center Party 1870-1933: A Study in Political Catholicism, by Ellen Lovell Evans (read 10 Nov 1998) This is quite a good history of the Center Party, which did good work at times in Germany, but was ignominious in its last days, giving in to Hitler with not much courage. Much of the book was slow-going, wading thru the minutiae of long-gone German political issues. Frankly, I read it because my maternal grandfather's first cousin, Franz Hitze, was prominent in the party from 1980 till he died in 1921. He is mentioned on 11 different pages of the book. But the final chapters, while not inspiring, are momentous. A good book.… (altro)
