There is certainly no shortage of books on data visualization, or information visualization, but it is remarkable that the vast majority of them focus on how to do visualization. Questions like why to do visualization and what visualization means are not equally well represented. This is an edited collection of chapters addressing different aspects of visualization in society, ranging from visualization in everyday life and work to inequalities, literacy and aesthetics. A much-needed book, in my opinion, and a highly recommended read for anyone involved in designing or researching visualization. As Alberto Cairo points out in his foreword, a sign of a discipline X maturing is the emergence of "the philosophy of X". The collection by Engebretsen and Kennedy indicates that visualization may be on the way to maturity.… (altro)
