I was delighted to spot another book by this author. I have read some of his earlier work and always found his setting and characters very recognizable.
This book again struck a note with me, as it was the period of my own childhood growing up in New Zealand. However, it became some what confronting as Merridee is the victim of incest. Nonetheless this book is very well-written and evocative of a time and place in New Zealand society. I suspect this might be based on the author's own childhood and I think he makes a cameo appearance as one of Merridee's brothers.… (altro)

While it's hard for me to judge the quality of the historical research, this is a very readable study of the interactions between New Zealand and China - and in particular the experience of the Cantonese and Hakka people who came to New Zealanders as gold miners in the 19th century, and of their descendants. The book stops in 1950, and I would love to read an extended edition or a second volume that covers the next sixty years of the story.
Having read a couple of the authors non-fiction works and not liking the writing style imagine my surprise when I read Oracles & Miracles and found each page was a joy to read.
It's the story of the relationship between twins - and to a lesser degree that of their mother - and how their choices (if one can say being made to leave school is a choice) has made them so different in their adult life to such a degree that one does wonder if they really could be twins.
The first impression of the mothers character isn't believable - however upon reflection and having met two women like her in my life perhaps she should have been cast as a 'wicked stepmother' - she is so abrubt and common!
Most of the scenes one can 'picture' however several others just should have been left out.… (altro)

The setting is 1929 Christchurch, New Zealand Ngaio Marsh it trying to find her place in the art scene in the city. When two of her female acquaintances are found murdered with their blood stained bodies splattered with blue paint, Ngaio becomes part of the suspect list. She remains tight-lipped but Inspector Duff knows she has information which will help solve the crime.
Once again this author masterfully depicts society with his use of conversation and characterisation.… (altro)
