Wow. Just wow. Not for the faint of heart, I was equally amazed and repelled.

I bought this because of an excerpt in Granta, describing a drunk and lost submariner on the Tokyo trains system. Wow did that strike a familiar chord.

This isn't a novel or story per se, but a series of vignettes and impressions - reminded me of Dos Passos USA Trilogy 'newsreels', going beyond submarine service to a striking account of the US involvement in the GWOT.

Highly recommended.
