Both the father Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870) and son Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-1895) were prolific French authors. It would help to organize the author pages for each if père and fils are used in the author boxes for your entries. On this page, author 1 is père, and author 2 is fils.

Alexandre Dumas père was born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie in Picardy, France. His parents were Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, born in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the mixed-race son of the marquis Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a French nobleman, and Marie-Cessette Dumas, a slave of Afro-Caribbean ancestry; and Marie-Louise Élisabeth Labouret, the daughter of an innkeeper.
Dumas père had numerous liaisons with women, and was known to have fathered at least four children out of wedlock, including Alexandre Dumas fils, who also became a successful novelist and playwright.
