Randolph Downes (1901–1975)

1747 The Rise of Warren Gamaliel Harding 1865-1920, by Randolph C. Downes (read 31 Oct 1982) This book is based a study of the Harding papers opened to the study of scholars in 1964. It is just plainly a poorly written book--it makes no effort to tell the story in an interesting way. It is filled with obvious judgmental words and I think is decidedly non-scholarly--of course the judgments are obvious judgments. I was bored by a book which is on an interesting subject, but was not interesting. This compares with the biography of Harding which I read in July of 1969 (The Shadow of Blooming Grove: Warren Harding in His Times, by Frances Russell) which I really enjoyed.… (altro)
