Viz: The Dog's Bollocks- The Best of Issues 26 to 31 di Chris Donald

Viz appears to be the British equivalent of Mad Magazine, but dirtier. I would have give this compilation two stars, but I figured that I would have enjoyed it more 20 years ago (when it was printed) and if I were British. Still, it had some very funny bits, and, of course, a few misses. In some ways the cartoons reminded me of some of the American 'underground' comics of the late '60s and early '70s, in a good way.

Rude Kids: The Unfeasible Story of "Viz" di Chris Donald

I've always been in two minds about Viz. Part of me sees it as a vital continuation of a proud tradition of British vulgarity - and another part sees it as one fart joke too far. It's good to see that Chris Donald, creator and for many years the editor of the comic, also has a similar problem with the comic. He seems far more amused by the slightly odder side of the comic - The Pathetic Sharks, Captain Morgan and his Hammond Organ, Black Bag, the truly legendary Vibrating Bum Faced Goats - than he does the more financially succesful, but fundamentally lazy, Fat Slags of this world. Donald is an engagingly blunt guide through the history of the comic, and although occasionally I don't fully share his views - not as kind as he could be to Oink! and the Winebibber - he's never anything other than a sympathetic figure. For my money, the duller smut of the comic is the sort of foundation which allows the wilder flights of surrealism to fly. It's a fascinating book for scholars of not only British comics but also British humour itself and comes highly recommended.… (altro)
