Breve biografia
Long before moving from South Florida to The Enchanted Mountains of Western New York State, Suzanne Dietz...writing under her studious non-fiction pseudonym, "S.Theresa Dietz..".took an immense interest in the subject of Floriography. As a matter of fact, her 440-page tour de force on the subject of the symbolic meanings and the possible powers of trees, plants, and flowers began well over twenty years ago. Floriography Today started out as a short handwritten list on one side of lined school paper, to ultimately grow to be the extensive, concise, meticulously researched, consolidated, and impeccably organized reference book on the subject of Floriography that it is. Destined to be a classic reference on the subject, Suzanne's exemplary skills in research and information organization will serve readers of this reference book for generations to come. Suzanne Dietz lives quietly alone in a very small rural town in The Enchanted Mountains of Western New York, where the winters are extremely cold for nearly six months of the year. Short days, long nights, and an abundance of snow create a surreal Winter Wonderland that is ideal for the daydreaming needed for creating art, composing songs, and writing stories.

My main quibble with this book is the illustrations: they're way too inconsistent. They include: photographs, black and white line drawings, watercolor-esque, and computer clipart. (And don't get me started on the fact that some entries don't have an illustration at all!) So yes, technically it's an "illustrated history," but the illustrations are underwhelming at best.

I definitely wouldn't call this "definitive" either, but I did learn a few interesting things at least.

The Complete Language of Food from S Theresa Dietz is both a useful resource and a fun book to flip through and learn about some food sources you might not have known about.

Its primary function is as a resource for those who want to know more about the foods (more specifically the ingredients in your favorite dishes) they eat and discover other things to try. Alphabetical by scientific name, with a cross reference by common name to make finding easier, you'll learn about what their actual and/or perceived powers are as well as any mythological or folk background. There are also symbols to alert you to possible toxicity or medicinal use.

For me, this served that purpose, but my enjoyment really came from skimming the book (this isn't really a sit and read cover to cover book) and reading the "possible powers" and "folklore and facts" sections. Many of these sent me on quests to learn a little more, which I always appreciate from any book.

This is attractive enough to be left out on display while also serving whatever function it might serve in your lifestyle. Highly recommended for those wanting to better understand the foods they eat and perhaps even why some foods appeal to you and others don't.

The Complete Language of Herbs by S Theresa Dietz looks like it will be a fun and attractive guide to all things herbal. I phrase it that way because the digital review copy I have is further away from being complete than most I get. That said, based on my experience with the publisher, and seeing the pages that look close to finished, I am confident in giving a good review.

The entries for each herb include the basic information, with a short bit about its role in folklore. While this doesn't offer specifics on how to use each herb for health or medicinal purposes (I don't even want to think about how big such a book would have to be) it does mention what it is believed to be useful for. From that, you can ask a CAM practitioner or look up how to use it. This is a general reference, not a medicinal how-to book.

The images they have are very nice and are geared, it seems, toward being able to identify the plants. Probably the part that I found most interesting was the folklore section of each herb. For some, it may well be the uses, or as Dietz calls it, "possible powers."

I would recommend this to anyone wanting a handy reference book on herbs that is also an attractive book. Because the version I saw is far from final, I would suggest looking at a physical copy or using a "look inside" type feature if online. But I feel confident that the finished version will be fine.
