Wa-Sha-Quon-Aisin, Grey Owl. His real name was Archie Belaney, and he left England in 1906 at the age of 17, to life the frontier life of the Canadian northland. Belaney adopted Indian customs and the name Grey Owl, and became famous in northern Ontario as a trapper, riverman and fire ranger. He fell in love with Anahareo, an Iroquois girl, and together they gave up the traplines to work for the protection of animals. Grey Owl gave public lectures in England and North America on conservation, and wrote 5 books about the wilderness. When he died in 1938 the truth about his non-Indian past was revealed. Although he had lived an elaborate lie, his love for the wilderness and wildlife was real. His message about Canada's heritage and environment still touches readers more than 50 years after his death. (from the back cover notes.)… (altro)
