Once again I am not disappointed by another book by master storyteller Anne de Roo. Nothing is predictable or contrived and the characters have depth and realism.

Set in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands in the 1840’s, this book explores the conflict between Pakeha and Māori. Jacky, who is part Māori, has been brought up by missionaries. His friends include a tough young Pakeha, Noah, and a gentle Māori from the mission, Matiu. Jacky wants to find out more about his Māori side but Māori chief Hone Heke is challenging British authority. There is a constant threat of conflict and it is inevitable that the friends will get caught up in it. A good historical novel in which readers will be brought to a greater understand of this period in New Zealand history.… (altro)

Jacky has been brought up by missionaries in the Waitangi area during the early days of Pakeha contact. When he finds out that he is part Maori it makes him want to find his family. Meanwhile Hone Heke is challenging the British and war is threatening to break out. Will Jacky, his cousin, Matiu, and Noah, his friend survive the conflict .
An exciting way to find out about the history surrounding the early days of Pakeha settlement in New Zealand. I would recommend this for ages 9
