Linda Grant De Pauw explores the varied roles women have played in war. De Pauw depicts women as victims and as warriors; as nurses, spies, sex workers, and wives and mothers of soldiers; as warrior queens leading armies into battle, and as baggage carriers marching in the rear. Her historical survey links models of military history to current public policy debates over women in the military.

This classic study by the author of Battle Cries and Lullabies presents the whole panorama of women at sea. Warriors and whalers, traders and seagoing housewives, privateers and present day adventurers are captured in an exciting and often inspiring narrative.

Not to be confused with the book with the same title by Cokie Roberts! De Pauw's volume, subtitled Women of America in the Revolutionary era, focuses more on everyday women including women of color. Roberts', as I recall (it's been a while), focused more on the higher-class women such as Abigail Adams.

This is an out-of-print book that I came across used, and being a history buff, picked it up.

This is hard to rate. I‘ll go with three stars, because it was published in 1975 and I‘m certain new info has come out since. It‘s a pick for readability and bringing awareness to the importance of women in history which was beginning to develop at the time of publication.

I was surprised to see on the back flap that it‘s geared towards younger readers (12 and up), because attitudes towards sex during the era is discussed. But hey it was the 1970s when it was written.
