Warren Denning

James Scullin, the Australian Prime Minister unlucky enough to be elected PM on the eve of the Great Depression (sworn in two days before the Wall Street Crash), is also remembered as the first red-haired Australian PM (Julia Gillard is the other).

This, strictly, isn't a biography of Scullin; rather it's a history of the Scullin Government, with Scullin playing a leading role, facing one of the greatest crises facing Australia. History shows the Scullin ministry, like everywhere else around the world, failed to solve the problems that the Depression wrought but it wasn't for lack of trying.
