This book takes the reader on an in-depth journey through time, accumulating the sensory inventions and amplifications that have led to an unconscious addiction. Society attempts to eliminate the symptoms of this addiction through the overuse of prescription drugs like Ritalin, which, it is argued, does more bad than good. Degrandepre also argues that "diseases" like ADD/ADHD are mere symptoms of restlessness and craving brought about by an individual's attempt to surpass the tolerance of sensory saturation. An individual becomes tolerant to a certain level of sensory input, and in an attempt to gain the same level of satisfaction or entertainment, the individual must now seek out even greater levels of sensory input.

Written before handheld games, smartphones and facebook became our lives, this book has strong implications for the future of sensory addiction and adaptation.

This book allows those with ADD/ADHD, ADD/ADHD caregivers, and those interested in the classified disorder a new perspective. A perspective that allows the individual to take control rather than rely on a chance at better living through modern chemistry.
