- Norman Davies jest synem Richarda i Elizabeth Davies. Studiował historię w Magdalen College na Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim, w Grenoble, w Perugii i na University of Sussex. Doktoryzował się w 1973 na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim.
Od 1971 roku jest wykładowcą, a od 1985 roku profesorem zwyczajnym w Szkole Studiów Słowiańskich i Wschodnioeuropejskich (School of Slavonic and East European Studies) University College London w Londynie. Jest członkiem korespondentem Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności w Krakowie.
Po przejściu na wcześniejszą emeryturę poświęcił się pisaniu książek. Jest autorem takich dzieł historycznych jak: Boże igrzysko (Historia Polski w dwóch tomach), Serce Europy (Krótka Historia Polski), Orzeł biały – czerwona gwiazda, Wojna polsko-sowiecka 1919-1920, Europa, Mikrokosmos (historia Wrocławia), Wyspy. Jedno z ostatnich jego dzieł, Powstanie 44 było jedną z najlepiej sprzedających się książek sierpnia 2004.
Dzięki książce Boże igrzysko (ang. God's Playground) historia Polski stała się bardziej dostępna czytelnikom na Zachodzie. Davies pisał o dziejach Polski często i z dużą dokładnością.
Członek Międzynarodowej Kapituły Orderu Uśmiechu.
W Krakowie, z którym Davies czuje więź osobistą (jest nawet zagorzałym kibicem miejscowej Cracovii[1]), poznał swoją żonę Marię Korzeniewicz, która pochodzi z Dąbrowy Tarnowskiej. Ma dwóch synów. Mieszka w Londynie.
W 1998 roku powstał film dokumentalny o Normanie Daviesie w reżyserii Krzysztofa Wierzbickiego pt."Historia Normana Daviesa"

Europe: A History di Norman Davies
Really dense, you must be really interested in detailed European history.
Holy crap, I finished it! It took me two months, but I did it. (To be fair, I had a 'few' things going on, and finished a few other books over the same period.)
This book is dense. It really is. But it is also really interesting. I didn't think I could enjoy this level of detail about states, family lines, successions, etc.; and in a sense it was as boring as it might sound (depending on your tastes/interests.) But the thing is... it actually was well worth the read, and maintained my interest throughout.
As an American, even one who reads a lot, the rise and fall of political units/states seems distant. Somehow, drowning in detail, this book manages to give a sense of the complexity and enormity of political changes that --even having read some previous history-- I was simply lacking. And not just the human suffering and cost (though there is plenty of that.) The sense of shifting identity, lost identity, just the vagaries of time, etc....

Very readable overview. The Eastern European slant (especially Poland) gave a new aspect even to the bits of history I thought I knew already.
A fantastic panoramic review of the history of The Isles (from prehistory through the 20th century), with plenty of commentary about the field of history, historiography, and the like.
Highly recommended for those interested in history, the Isles, or any of the resident countries or peoples (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, UK, Great Britain, Celts, Picts, Bretons, etc.)
