Davies book is a great example of recollections of the war gathered posthumously from the copious letters written during the war. This book covers the war letters of Captain Harold Owen Owen, 6th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers. Owen was straight out of Harrow when the war broke, and quickly mustered in support. Owen came from a wealthy merchant family in Wales, and so his perspective is from that point of view. Owen arrived in Mesopotamia following the surrender at Kut, and covers his time in the trenches during the following siege. He was invalided back to India where he spent considerable time, and his letters from there are quite interesting. He eventually was sent back to Meso, in time for the conclusion of the war. Eager to get back to tend to his various business and family holdings, he life was unfortunately cut short in a terrible accident.
