A Witch in Time by Catherine Kean
Cat’s Paw book 1. Paranormal romance novella.
Colin goes overboard in a violent storm in 1635. He wakes up in the 21st century where he searches for help and answers to his past.

A complex storyline for this novella length story, but that means that is a lot going on in this time traveling pirate, small town, witch and magical cat mystery romance.
I thought the pirate got over his lost wife too quickly but that’s explained as part of their investigation into the ship and survivors all those hundreds of years ago.
A little too much description/ graphic images of the storm intro and the seasick woman. So glad I live in current times.
Overall enjoyed the romantic sleuthing and magic touches.

Fun book. In magical Cat's Paw Cove, you never know if you're talking to a witch, a fairy, or, in this case, a bookworm. Astor's magical talent is the ability to step into the world of any book. As the oldest of her siblings, Astor has had the responsibility of caring for her family ever since her mother left them. It's no wonder that escaping into the worlds of Little Women or The Great Gatsby is more interesting. It's the perfect magical talent for the manager of a haunted bookstore.

Wade is the host of a television show called Haunted Hoaxes, where he exposes fake supernatural events. He believes that there is no such thing as paranormal activity. When his show is about to be canceled, Wade plans to win renewal by exposing Tales bookstore as a fraud. Things don't go quite the way he expected.

I loved following Wade's conversion. The book opened with a prologue from Wade's childhood detailing a traumatic event that goes a long way toward explaining his obsession. When he arrived in Cat's Paw Cove, he simply observed the bookstore and noticed Astor right away. When they met, there was no doubt about the sparks that flew between them. Neither planned to act on them because Wade is only there for a short time, and Astor can't imagine getting involved with someone like Wade. However, they can't resist spending time with each other, and because of that, Wade is around as ghostly activity in the bookstore begins to escalate. It was funny to see him try so hard to explain away the things that happened. There was also a terrific scene involving Astor's cat, Pickles, and a compost bin that also chipped away at his disbelief.

The real kicker came when Pickles disappeared into a damaged journal, and Astor followed, vanishing right before Wade's eyes. The intensity was fantastic as Astor dealt with obstacles to her return, including an unexpected quarantine. On the other side, Wade and her family were desperate to find a way to get her back home. Help came from an unexpected source that made it possible for Astor to get back and answered questions about Wade's past. The ending was terrific.

Good story about two people who must overcome their insecurities before they can find the happiness that each wants. Sydney is a reporter for the local paper. Her dream is to move from print journalism to broadcast journalism, and she knows how to do it. All she needs to do is engage the interest of fellow reporter and local TV sports personality, Chip Haggerty. The problem is that his conversation is loaded with sports metaphors, leaving her clueless and unable to talk to him, much less attract him. What she needs is an interpreter.

Levi is a real estate agent who has been tasked with convincing two hold-out property owners to sell so that the site can be developed into a modern complex. His boss is dangling a partnership in front of him for extra motivation. What he needs is someone impartial who can help point out the benefits.

I liked both Sydney and Levi. They knew each other in high school, where the shy, nerdy, overweight Sydney tutored the good-looking football player that she had a crush on. Though she never expected anything to come of it, she was still hurt when he ignored her after he no longer needed her help. In the years since high school, Sydney made herself over into a beautiful and talented woman, though she frequently still sees herself as that high school loser. Though Levi is successful at his job, he still sees himself as that kid from the wrong side of the tracks. He's willing to do anything to gain the respect that he craves.

I liked their first meeting. Sydney recognized Levi immediately, though Levi didn't recognize her. He did notice how beautiful she was now and intrigued when he learned that she is a reporter. He has no trouble asking her to help him again, this time by writing a positive article about the redevelopment plans. Sydney is determined not to be taken advantage of this time and agrees to look into writing an unbiased story if he will help her land Chip as a boyfriend.

I enjoyed the development of Sydney and Levi's relationship. The sparks are there from the beginning, but both try to ignore them in pursuit of their individual goals. Sydney is focused on getting Chip's attention and tries to ignore the signs that her high school crush isn't as over as she thought it was. Even worse, Chip isn't showing up too well when Levi is around. For Levi, it doesn't take long at all for him to realize that he'd like to get a lot closer to Sydney for himself, not help her get closer to Chip. For both of them, their own insecurities work against them. Levi spent his whole life listening to his father put him down, wanting nothing more than to be respected for who he is. Though he looks confident on the outside, there's always that little kid inside who remembers being poor, laughed at, and mistreated by his father. Why then should beautiful Sydney want him when hot-shot Chip is there? For Sydney, she may be thin, beautiful, and respected now, but she can't forget the plain, picked-on, and almost invisible teenager who had a crush on Levi. He could have anyone he wanted, why should he look twice at her?

To make matters worse, Levi's boss makes it plain to Sydney that he expects Levi's previous relationship with his daughter to start again, and he wouldn't be inclined to give Levi that partnership if someone interfered with it. There were some interesting twists as both Levi and Sydney discover that they have to love themselves before they can accept the love of someone else. I enjoyed the ending, and seeing Levi and Sydney find the love they both wanted and deserved.

Secondary characters were well done. Levi's boss and his daughter, Beth, were both people it was easy to dislike. He was the stereotypical uncaring boss, who is only interested in the bottom line. I was a little worried about his influence on Levi at first, but Levi was up to the challenge. Beth was a piece of work. Definitely a spoiled daddy's girl, she did what she wanted without care for the consequences. I was very happy to see that Levi had her number. Chip was the illustration of the dumb jock. He had all the charm and charisma he needed to get by, often by convincing someone to help him. I was irritated by the way he talked Sydney into editing (read "rewriting") his columns for him. Even when he was supposed to be with Sydney, he saw nothing wrong with ignoring her to be with the people fawning all over him.

There wasn't much magic in this book, mostly just a couple examples of Levi's talent, and a mention of Fiona's potions. That's okay; the story was fun even without it.

Good friends to lovers story. Heath and Tori were best friends growing up, from playing Captain Planet as kids to going to prom together. Tori didn't care that his mom was the maid and that his father was a drunk, Heath was her friend. Heath liked spending time with Tori because he could escape the problems he had at home. When baseball gave him a chance to leave, he took it, but not before realizing that he felt more than friendship for Tori.

I liked both Tori and Heath, but I hurt for them too. Tori is a warm, loving person with a unique talent for matching people with their forever loves. This pairs well with her job as the town's only event planner. She is pretty well tied to her hometown, taking care of her widowed mother (who is about as helpless as a shark). I hurt for Tori because her mom continually puts her down, which gives her a low opinion of her worth. The one guy she was interested in made it clear that he only wanted to be friends. Heath also has some self-worth issues. Though he's confident enough professionally, off the field is another matter. When an injury threatens that job, he has some decisions to make. The invitation to be the guest of honor at his hometown's tricentennial celebration comes at a good time but carries with it a different set of problems. His memories of home aren't all good ones, plus he has to see Tori again.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Heath and Tori. Tori is nervous about seeing him again because he hadn't reacted well to her advances all those years ago. Heath is wary because he still remembers Tori's father telling him that he was nowhere near good enough for Tori. Neither one has forgotten those feelings, and spending time together during the celebrations isn't going to help. Sure enough, the sparks between them fly hot and fast, even though each is reluctant to do anything about it. Tori thinks she can hide/suppress her feelings for a few days, and Heath isn't sure he wants to risk their friendship. Eventually, those sparks burst into flame, and their fantasies came true. I liked seeing them finally talk to each other about their feelings, but there are still obstacles keeping them apart. Each of them had to face the ghosts of their pasts before they could have a chance at a future. I liked their big moment at the end and seeing how they find a way to make it work. I'd like to see more of them in the future to catch up on how they are doing.

There is a little bit of suspense during the story. Tori is given the job of the tricentennial with very short notice when the town's committee falls apart. Tori had to fight for the chance against her high school nemesis, whose fiancé also wants the job. I ached for Tori when it seemed like anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. I liked Heath's protectiveness and his determination to help her in any way he can. The resolution of the problem was not what I expected, but not a surprise for where it was.
