Although this tends to read like the doctoral thesis it probably was, the author has an interesting story to tell of how a range of Japanese literary and artistic figures, chastened by the rise of fascism in Japan, latched onto the project of Manchukuo as a way of retaining their ideals of ameliorating the depressed state of the Japanese rural population while bowing to political realities at home; at least until the course of war in China illustrated the hollowness of the "utopian fantasy of racial harmony and cooperation" that screened the thrust of Japanese imperialism.… (altro)
