Alexander Crummell (1819–1898)

It’s very traditional Christianity, but I don’t think it’s what we fear in that. W.E.B. Du Bois calls him a very forgiving man, and I don’t think he hated anybody. People often reject this sort of thing for reasons that are less than holy. They find another teacher, one who lives a little farther away from home, and then ignore them at the critical time, because they didn’t really want to be part of something larger than the self. It’s true there are also people who worry about explaining everything except what they ought to be doing. I don’t think Crummell is like that. Du Bois testifies that he lived a good life.
