I think Melanie Crowder is a great writer. This sort of fanciful portrayal of foster care and adoption just couldn't hold a candle to [b:Forever, or a Long, Long Time|30531524|Forever, or a Long, Long Time|Caela Carter|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1481942537s/30531524.jpg|51057131], which explored the toll of foster care with much more emotional depth. Crowder's book is shorter, less complex, and features an anthropomorphized owl, which may make it more appealing for some young readers.

Well. I'll admit that if this work of young adult historical fiction hadn't been a novel-in-verse (or a book similar in length to this), I might not have been able to read it. It likely would have been too heavy for me to get all the way through. Part of the beauty of novels-in-verse is that even when they're raw, tackling such difficult subjects, they can cover a lot but with an economy of just the right words.

And there certainly is much beauty in the telling of this painful, angering story. Angering for me because I find it such a shame how long and how hard people must too often struggle and protest just to be treated fairly. To be treated as human beings.

No, Clara's journey isn't at all an easy one. But her determination in the midst of opposition and seemingly insurmountable odds kept me reading. Reinforcing to me that even when the struggle for human rights is hard, humanity is worth it.

Mazie is a senior in high school who has bigger dreams than her farm in Nebraska. Her dreams are to be on a Broadway stage in NYC and days before her high school graduation she is on her way, much to her parents and the love of her life’s dismay. When she arrives in the city, she quickly realizes that dreams aren’t always what they seem. She books a less than desired role in a traveling tractor show and takes off. Along the way she learns may lessons, including not losing who you are. This book was really well written and I really enjoyed it.… (altro)
