Yes, princesses do wear hiking boots, and climb like monkeys, etc., etc. Yeah, this book is useful to help make the princess craze (thanks, Disney, you assholes) less limiting to kids. So if your kid is already into princesses and you need to expand rather vision of princesses, so the kid doesn't limit herself, then this book will be helpful. But if your kid has, somehow, yet escaped the princess BS, then stay away! Because this book will only contribute to the princess-ification of children's lives.… (altro)

I get what the author was trying to do around superheroes -- show different ways of being "super" and normalize it to some extent, and also help good behaviors along by associating them with superheroes. In theory the book was targeted both to boys and girls, but in practice, it was aimed primarily at a boy -- the boy was the protagonist, and the girl (his sister) is just an observer. That's unfortunate, and unnecessary -- the book could easily have showed the boy and the girl each having superhero issues, for instance. This is one of the cutest picture books I've come across. The message is cheesy but it's also a very good one: being a princess has to do with what's in your heart, not where you live, what you do, or what you wear. I really enjoyed the little activities this particular princess does with her friends and family. Each line of text ends with a word that rhymes with the previous line of text, so this book could be used in a lesson about rhyming words. The author added a page at the end with a mirror on it so whoever is reading the story feels like a little princess and that's got to be my favorite part. I'd read this to first or second graders.… (altro)
