The weird and or supernatural is at best rather marginal in this 1899 collection by a renowned ornithologist. The stories are more the sort of anecdotes one might hear around a campfire (or bottle of liquor) than short stories, as many tend to just sort of peter out at the end. However, it does contain a number of amusing western stories mostly set in late 19th century Arizona, complete with gold-addled prospectors, fradulent providers of archaeological and biological specimens, snake oil salesmen, vicious Injuns and the like.
