interesting survey of the topic. HInted at more personal stories that were not developed. Found the parts about the EEG particularly interesting, but the radar and microwave research are sure to appeal even more to those with a bent towards Physics or engineering
An excellent book full of stories and history about the man who lead the building of the atomic bomb, and the great supporting cast of other players involved.
Everyone knows Roald Dahl as the writer of many popular children’s books, but as a young man he led a fascinating life as an RAF pilot and then an agent for the BSC in Washington D.C. during World War II. The Irregulars by Jennet Conant covers Dahl’s time in covert operations while examining his personal life, the lives of the people around him, and the larger happenings of the war. Conant uses a lot of primary sources to reveal many details while still keeping the narrative moving to paint a picture of a flawed but very interesting man who played an important role during the war. Readers who enjoy historical nonfiction — especially WWII — should not miss this one.… (altro)
An in-depth, enlightening look at the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, the challenges and frustrations, the amazingly high intellectual level of the physicists, the infrastructure needed to make it happen, family life or lack of it, then, the repercussions afterwards. It wasn't pretty.
