I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

There was a lot going on in this novel: Tom is facing an enquiry over an injury to a suspect he was chasing; he is asked to assist in a cold case after the body of his first girlfriend is discovered; he has two suspicious deaths he is meant to be investigating; and then later a schoolgirl goes missing.

I found the thread relating to the cold case very dull, and started skimming the italicized sections set in the past early on - far more information than I needed about Tom's first sexual encounter. The solution to the main case was a bit 'out there', but there was a lot of good misdirection along the way. I felt the missing schoolgirl strand could have been better developed - it was mostly off-page and seemed tacked on. And as for the inquiry, I kept forgetting all about it.

Not the best in this series.

This was a quick, interesting read, with likeable characters. There were two (and then towards the end, three) different crimes being investigated, which kept the story moving.

One quibble:

SPOILER

there is no way a tall man would fit into a pair of medium sized women's tights.

Also, that was possibly the oddest last paragraph of a book I have ever read.

When journalist Eddie Barham is found dead in his home, DI Tom Mariner initially believes that it is suicide. But with the help of Constable Tony Knox he starts his investigation.
An enjoyable well-written story but I believe it would have been a better paced story without many of the descriptions about autism.
(First published in 2004 as A worm in the bud.)

DI Mariner is on the case of a missing teenager boy, when a girl is reported missing and he is moved to this 'more important' case. There seems to be no motive for their disappearance or connection between the two. And no headway in the case for over a week, until finally a break in the case.
An enjoyable, well-written mystery with some good rounded characters.
For me an improvement on the first in the series and can be read as a stand-alone book.
Look forward to the next in the series.
